Hello, my name is Mateo Ángel and I am studying Soil and Water Science here atMontana State University. I am a second-generation Cuban immigrant, with my Cuban heritagetracing back to my father’s side and a very culturally focused mother. I grew up in the small town of Van Meter, Iowa, and, after a childhood of outdoorsing in the Midwest and some Rocky Mountain exploring, I decided to come out to Montana for college. I love the woods and am currently researching some soils I collected in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, where I work over the summers. I am very conservation and forestry focused, hopingto bring a background of soils to the forestry industry across the NW Rockies in my future.

I am a fourth-year undergraduate student pursuing dual degrees in Psychology and Sociology. As a first-generation college student from Missoula, Montana, I am passionate about working with children and aspire to become a school counselor. My academic and research experiences are preparing me to pursue a master’s degree in school counseling and clinical mental health counseling.

Currently, I am conducting research with Dr. Cara Palmer on how childhood trauma influences the relationship between sleep and emotions in young adults. This past summer, I also worked in the Sleep and Development Lab on the PALS sleep study, collaborating with children and undergraduate researchers. My long-term goal is to build a career that supports children facing difficult circumstances by providing resources, guidance, and advocacy.
