Important AnnouncementsGrad Appreciation Week, April 6-10MSU wants you to know that we appreciate our graduate students! There are college level happenings around campus throughout the week.
Message Graduate Student Leadership CouncilTown Hall:GSLC wants to hear from you! We are holding a Town Hall on April 14th at noon in AJM Johnson Hall 251 to hear your feedback as we continue to advocate for graduate student needs. As always, you can reach out to us via email or the feedback form on our website (https://www.montana.edu/gradschool/gslc.html). You can also get more involved by becoming a member of our organization. ASMSU resolution:ASMSU passed a resolution calling on the MSU administration to address the financial difficulties faced by graduate students. GSLC thanks our ASMSU representatives for their advocacy of policies supporting graduate student wellbeing and financial security. We appreciate their efforts to support the graduate student population. Recently, the Exponent published an article about the new resolution that included the following commentary: “‘Graduate students’ primary purpose at the University is academic, not employment-related. They are, therefore, defined primarily as students, not University employees,’ Becker (Michael Becker, MSU Vice President of Communications) said. Subsequently, GAs cannot access the MUS employee medical plan, according to him.” GSLC would like to reiterate that graduate students frequently hold multiple roles at MSU, which often carry equal weight and priority. Many graduate students work countless hours in their employee positions, which are essential to university functioning. Importantly, they continue to do so without employee benefits. GSLC affirms the critical role that graduate student employees play and the importance of their dual position as both students and employees. It is also worth noting that in our academic roles, PhD student graduation rates are perhaps the most important factors in maintaining MSU's R1 research status, an outcome that depends directly on the support and stability of our graduate student population. Vice Provost for Graduate Education:Candidates for the Vice Provost for Graduate Education will be on campus next week. Keep an eye out for student feedback forums with these candidates. Strategic Planning:Reminder to fill out the survey for strategic planning if you have not done so already. It is important that diverse graduate student voices are heard as we shape the future of our university. Find the survey here: https://montana.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2ayhdQIFUiR88Wq.
