In the rabbit project, youth will gain knowledge and skills in managing and caring for rabbits, selecting quality rabbits, feeding balanced rations and maintaining management records on which to base decisions regarding feed, production and breeding. Youth wishing to enroll in Market Rabbit or Breeding Rabbit must also be enrolled in Level 1, 2 or 3.

Rabbit, Level 1

This project is designed for beginning rabbit members with little or no experience in raising rabbits. By the end of the project, youth will be able to name several rabbit breeds, identify the parts of the animal, discuss the sanitation methods needed to raise rabbits, describe good feeding and watering practices, learn to keep feed and financial records, and demonstrate proper showmanship procedures.

Complete a minimum of seven activities and three learning experiences each year to complete this project. It may take three years to complete this level.

Rabbit, Level 2

Enroll in Market and/or Breeding in ZSuite.

The intermediate-level project is designed for 4-H members who wish to expand on their knowledge gained at the previous level. Youth will recognize body types, judge and show rabbits, tattoo a rabbit, keep records, identify diseases, administer medication, record growth rates, and market products.

Complete a minimum of seven activities and three learning experiences each year to complete this project. It may take three years to complete this level.

Rabbit, Level 3

Enroll in Market and/or Breeding in ZSuite.

Level three of the rabbit project is designed for those who want to explore rabbit production. Older youth will develop a breeding program, design a rabbitry, cull based on production, prevent diseases, develop sportsmanship and develop a marketing plan.
