Formatting Help Throughout the Semester

The Graduate School offers many opportunities for ETD Formatting Presentations and Drop-In Help sessions throughout the semester. Feel free to attend one of our ETD Presentations with the Formatting Advisor, MSU Library, and the MSU Writing Center for information on formatting, publishing, copyright, and writing.

Formatting Advisor

Whether you are just starting to write your thesis or it is your final semester of Graduate School, it is never too soon to reach out to the Formatting Advisor! Communication between the Formatting Advisor and students is often through email or the Drop-In Help hours; however, an in-office appointment can be arranged if needed.

The Formatting Advisor with the Graduate School helps facilitate your ETD submission. The Formatting Advisor does not provide technical or editing support and will not format your ETD for you. It is the student’s responsibility to create a professional document that conforms to the Graduate School’s formatting guidelines. They will also notify students of any changes that need to be made for a document to be approved.

Frequently Asked Questions About Formatting Help

The Graduate School does not provide technical support for Microsoft Word or LaTeX. However, we have a Formatting How-To Help Page with our most common questions and there are many other ways you can get help.

For help with Microsoft Word, you can review Microsoft’s Word Support Webpage or take a Computer Applications course through the Gallatin College in Bozeman or MSU's Extended University. The MSU library also has an on-going series of workshops and has a subscription to LinkedIn Learning.

For help with LaTeX, you can contact your department for help finding a LaTeX expert, review the Helpful Links on our LaTeX Guide, or visit Professor Mark Owkes' LaTeX Wiki.

Lastly, students may work with a typist or editor for help formatting a document in Microsoft Word or for line editing or transcription. However, using a typist or editor to create or author your work is strictly prohibited. The Graduate School does not endorse any single typists/editors. If a student chooses to hire a typist/editor on their own, we provide a list of good questions to ask typists and editors when hiring them.
