General

  • Exits should be free of obstructions.
  • Rooms should be free of obstructions to cleaning and maintenance.
  • Rooms should be free of signs of moisture, water problems or mold.

Safety

  • Do not eat or drink in the art classroom where chemicals are present.
  • Ensure proper ventilation.
  • Wash hands frequently when working with any chemicals.
  • Do not use glazes containing lead or cadmium.
  • Wear protective clothing and gloves.
  • Wear suitable eye protection.
  • Use pump spray bottles rather than spray paints.
  • Try to replace turpentine and other aggressive solvents with solvents that are less toxic, volatile, and flammable.
  • Keep all hazardous chemicals locked up when not in use.
  • Know the location of emergency eye wash stations and safety showers.
  • Do not leave open containers of solvents or varnish.
  • Pay close attention to the chemicals listed on labels. Do not purchase hazardous chemicals.
  • Pregnant women in particular should not use any lead pigments or products.
  • Dispose of hazardous materials in the proper manner. (Do not put down the drain or in the garbage.)
