Course Description:

This course focuses on the treatment and management of mental health problems with consideration to the assessment, diagnosis, and comorbid conditions of individuals across the lifespan. This course combines treatment modalities including individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, brief psychotherapy, and medication management while integrating multicultural skills for heal promotion, and clinical prevention and management of mental health problems. Additional focus and consideration are placed on the management of the pediatric and geriatric population.

Catalog Description:

This course focuses on the treatment and management of mental health problems utilizing individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, brief psychotherapy, and medication management. Additional focus and consideration are placed on the management of the pediatric and geriatric population.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Conduct individual and group psychotherapy.
  2. Develop an age-appropriate assessment and treatment plan.
  3. Utilize therapeutic communication during patient and professional interactions.

  1. Complete a psychotherapy process recording on a clinical patient. (CLO 1,3)
  2. Develop a personal model of psychotherapy (CLO 1,2)
  3. Complete a full psychiatric evaluation (CLO 1,2,3)

Recommended Content:

Play therapy. Use of screening tools in medication management. Therapy modalities especially geared towards children and geriatric populations. Billing and coding ICD-10 codes, CPT codes, and charting.

Recommended Clinical Expernces/Sites:

Inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities and practices caring for elderly and children/adolescents. The total 180 hours is broken down into 135 hours of APRN medication management and 45 hours of therapy (35 hours of individual therapy and 10 hours of group therapy).
