Make that B.S. Diploma into a M.S. Dilpoma too, in just one year!

The Industrial & Management Systems Engineering (IMSE) Accelerated Master of Science (M.S.) degree program is intended to attract and retain academically qualified students, who wish to obtain a M.S. degree in conjunction with their B.S. degree. This was formerly called the "Seamless" M.S. degree program.

As shown in this example Flowsheet. The accelerated masters can be completed by integrating both graduate and undergraduate course requirements in the final two years of the combined period of study. This integration allows up to six credits of 400-level IMSE courses in the M.S. degree to also satisfy the credit requirements of the B.S. undergraduate degree.1

The Accelerated Master of Science degree program is designed to allow qualified IMSE students and Financial Engineering (EFIN) students (EFINs must complete the Engineering Management Minor) to complete the IMSE M.S. degree requirements by extending their period of study one additional year past the traditional four-year period of undergraduate study.

There are two steps to being accepted into the IMSE Accelerated Master of Science Program:

Step 1 (Qualifying Pre-Application)

Review of qualifications to enter program.  In the first step, your academic qualification must be reviewed for entry into the IMSE Accelerated M.S. Program.  You should apply for this review in the first semester after passing 80 credits toward you B.S. degree in IMSE or EFIN with Engineering Managment Minor.

Complete this Qualifying Pre-Application (fillable PDF) and submit it to the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering departmental office along with an unofficial copy of your most recent transcript from MyInfo. Once your qualifications have been reviewed, you will be invited to apply the M.S. degree program.

You must include the following additional information in your personal statment for both the qualifying pre-application and official graduate school application.

  1. How do you define “social justice”?
  2. Why is social justice important to you?
  3. How can engineering increase social justice?

Step 2 (Graduate School Application)

Apply to the Masters program. In this second step, you apply through the Graduate School to be admitted as a M.S. degree graduate student in the IMSE program. You submit your application through the Graduate School website.

In addition you must plan your proposed courses for completion of the B.S. and M.S. degreeand have it reviewed and approved by IMSE Graduate Program Coordinator. NOTE: You must apply to the Graduate School in the first semester that you will have completed and registered for more than 120 credits toward your IMSE B.S. degree.

Requirements

The following is a list of applicant requirements for admission to the IMSE Accelerated M.S. Program:

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate IMSE major or EFIN major with engineering managment minor at MSU.
  • Good academic standing at the time of application to Graduate School, with minimum GPA of 3.00.
  • Completed a minimum of 80 credit hours towards the B.S. degree at the time of application to Graduate School.
  • A minimum of 12 credits of EIND courses remaining to complete the B.S. degree requirements at the time of acceptance by Graduate School.
  • Acceptance by Graduate School is completed before the start of the last semester in the B.S. degree.

Financial Awards

Undergraduate (UG) students approved for the accelerated masters (Step One) can retain any financial aid award granted to them for their UG degree.  Senior UG students taking 12 or more UG credits can receive financial aid for all courses including graduate level courses (5xx).  Senior UG students taking less than 12 UG credits can receive financial aid only for the UG courses -- resulting in a tuition charge for any graduate level courses (5xx).  In order to qualify for the full amount of Federal loans, UG students must take > 6 UG credits in any semester.

1 Students must meet all degree requirements for the B.S. IMSE degree or B.S. EFIN degree with Engineering Management Minor and the M.S. IMSE degree. However, the B.S. degree requirements must be completed before completion of the M.S. degree.  A student who enters the program, but does not complete it in accordance with the simultaneous enrollment policies of the Graduate School will default to the standard B.S. degree program and loses the ability to count EIND 400 level courses taken as an undergraduate towards any future graduate degree at MSU.
