VIII. Senators’ Open Conversation
1. Regarding end of year spending caps: A great number of faculty conduct research in the summer months due to weather, time, and availability of plant species (for example). The mandate to cease spending during a time when much research is ramping up greatly hinders the ability of researchers to get studies started. For an institution that aspires to maintain its R1 status, curtailing research efforts in response to fiscal paperwork seems counterproductive.
a. Due to fiscal year end on June 30th
b. Minimize spending, but if you need it just stay in good contact with your Fiscal department.
i. Give them a heads up on what you plan to spend.
